PopUpCop's XGuard™ settings allow you to control downloading and running of ActiveX controls.

PopUpCop features XGuard™, which watches for the Security Warning dialogs. When PopUpCop sees that you are about to download an ActiveX control, it displays its own warning dialog, which contains as much information about the control and publisher as PopUpCop can get from the Web page.

PopUpCop ActiveX Warning Dialog

This dialog also contains a link to our Web site, where you can search the Web and news groups for more information about the publisher. For some of the more common ActiveX controls, we provide additional information. For example, if the publisher gives uninstall instructions on the web and we know the publisher, we provide you a link to those instructions.

If you decide that you never wish to download software from this publisher, PopUpCop lets you say so once. You will never have to say, "No, I do not wish to download" software from this publisher again! This causes PopUpCop to add the publisher to the XGuard™ Never trust software from list. You can review and edit these entries from the PopUpCop Options XGuard™ page, shown here:

PopUpCop Options XGuard™

Don't ask about software from

This list displays ActiveX Publisher names that you have approved. When ever an ActiveX control from a company on this list is encountered, the software will be downloaded, installed and allowed to run.

This list displays ActiveX Publisher names that you have specifically disallowed. When ever an ActiveX control from a company on this list is encountered, it will be ignored.

Use the arrow-buttons, Left Button & Right Button, to move names between the lists.

New...

Use the New... button to add a publisher name to the list.

Enter a New Publisher Dialog

Edit...

Use the Edit... button to modify the name of a publisher.

Delete

Selecting an item from either list and clicking Delete removes the item from the list after prompting to confirm the delete.

Enable XGuard™

A check in this box means that XGuard™ is watching for ActiveX control download attempts.

Ask me before transmitting information about an ActiveX control to the PopUpCop Web site

Publisher Information Warning Dialog

If you click on the Help me find out more about this publisher... link in the XGuard dialog, PopUpCop will send information about the ActiveX control to the PopUpCop web site to retrieve additional information on the control. The PopUpCop web site has a database of ActiveX controls. This information does not contain user specific information and is used to provide you with additional information about the ActiveX software. Once you are at the PopUpCop publisher information page, you can then use the information and tools on this page to learn more about the publisher and control.

Block downloads of programs on pages that try to download ActiveX controls

If you check this option, PopUpCop will block any attempts to download an executable file on any page where it has detected an ActiveX download attempt. (This technique is used by some aggressive Web sites in order to "wear you down" and get you to agree to download their malicious software.)

Disabling PopUpCop disables XGuard

If you check this option (checked by default), when you disable PopUpCop, XGuard will also be disabled. Uncheck this option if you wish XGuard to continue helping to protect you from accidentluy downloading software even is the rest of PopUpCop is disabled.
