A new type of animated advertisement started appearing in October 2002 at some Web sites, most notably at Yahoo!'s news site.
This new technology, called "eyelets", employs a special type of
Java applet to deliver streaming media to your desktop.
This technology is especially annoying to many of our customers, since the technology can deliver streaming audio as
well as video, and the audio "plays over" any other audio that is currently playing.
Imagine that it is early morning, and you want start the day slowly. You make a pot of coffee, put a nice, quiet CD
into your computer's drive, put your headphones on so as not to disturb anyone else, and sit down to read some
news on your computer. After reading a story or two, suddenly, some rock and roll singer is yelling into your ear.
Some Web advertisers just don't seem to "get it".
While users of PopUpCop can already block this technology by disabling all Java applets or by choosing "Stop all animations"
from PopUpCop's Settings and actions menu, most users will want to keep Java Applets enabled, since
many Internet chat clients and many Internet games are implemented using Java applets.
EdenSoft realized that this technology was annoying enough to deserve to be blocked without forcing our customers to block
other Java applets. Therefore, we "awarded" this technology an annoyance button of its own -
- an "eye for an eyelet". We have adjusted our factory settings
so that this technolgy is blocked for all annoyance levels which also block Flash autoplay.
