When I try to show or hide PopUpCop using Internet Explorer's toolbar menu, a different toolbar shows or hides.

Internet Explorer tries to keep track of the location and identity of each toolbar add-in that you have installed. Unfortunately, sometimes after installing or uninstalling a toolbar, Internet Explorer gets confused about which toolbar is which. In these situations, when you check or uncheck a toolbar item on the View.Toolbars menu, the actual toolbar which is shown or hidden is not the one that you checked.

How can I fix this problem?

EdenSoft has written a small program which will correct the situation. If you run the program, the problem described above will be corrected, but you will have to configure your toolbar again. Click here to download the program.

If you prefer to fix the problem manually using regedit.exe, instructions are available from Microsoft here. While the symptoms described in the Microsoft article is not the same as the one described here, the resolution for both problems is the same.

Once you have downloaded and run the FixTBConflicts.exe program, you will have to configure your toolbars again. Read the topics below this one for instructions on how to configure your toolbars.

How do I show PopUpCop on my toolbar?

In most installations, PopUpCop's buttons appear automatically in Internet Explorer's toolbar, without any action required of you. In some configurations, however, you may need to manually make PopUpCop visible in Internet Explorer's toolbar. Here's how. Pull down the View menu and choose Toolbars then PopUpCop.

If you are using Internet Explorer version 5.0 or 5.01, the PopUpCop menu item in the Toolbars sub menu is often labeled with the word Radio. (More exactly, the label for the first toolbar control is used for all other toolbar controls.) This incorrect labeling is caused by a program flaw in Internet Explorer version 5.0. This flaw was fixed in Internet Explorer version 5.5. You must upgrade to version 5.5 or later of Internet Explorer to correct the flaw.

How do I position PopUpCop on my toolbar?

Internet Explorer enables you to choose the locations of the buttons in its toolbar. When you install PopUpCop, PopUpCop's buttons appear in the lower right-hand row of buttons. You may prefer to see them elsewhere.

Each set of buttons in Internet Explorer's toolbar has a "handle" -- a vertical bar to the left of each set of buttons. (On Windows XP, the handle appears as a vertical line of dots.) To rearrange the layout of the buttons in the toolbar, use your mouse to grab a handle and drag it to any button row in the toolbar, or drag it below or above the button rows to create a new row.

If you have Internet Explorer version 6, you may need first to unlock the toolbar. When the toolbar is locked, the handles are not visible. To unlock the toolbar, pull down Internet Explorer's View menu and choose Toolbars. If the menu includes an item named Lock the Toolbars and that menu item is checked, click on it. This unlocks the toolbar; that is, it exposes the handles and thus enables you to drag the groups of buttons into new positions. Once you've done this, it's a good idea to re-lock the toolbar. The procedure to lock it is the same as the procedure to unlock it: pull down the View menu, choose Toolbars, then choose Lock the Toolbars. This locks them. Observe that the handles disappear.

PopUpCop doesn't show up in Internet Explorer's Toolbar menu. What do I do?

PopUpCop can fail to appear in the View/Toolbars menu for a couple of reasons:

  • If you upgrade PopUpCop without closing all your Internet Explorer windows and restarting your computer, some essential files failed to be replaced because they were in use. The solution is simply to restart your computer.

  • If you are using Internet Explorer version 5.0 or 5.01, the PopUpCop menu item in the Toolbars sub menu is often labeled with the word Radio.

  • Buried deep within Internet Explorer version 6 (only!) is a setting that sometimes causes install problems. The name of this setting is Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart). If this flag is turned off, PopUpCop cannot show up on your toolbar. The install process tests this flag and asks for your permission to set it to "yes". If the install program failed to detect the setting, or you changed the setting after install, you must change the flag manually:

    1. On the Internet Explorer main menu, choose Tools.
    2. Choose Internet Options....
    3. When the Internet Options dialog displays, choose, the Advanced tab
    4. Scroll down until you see the option labeled Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart) in the Browsing category.
    5. Make sure that the checkbox to the left of the item is checked.
    6. Click OK to record your changes.
    7. Close all open Internet Explorer windows.
    8. Open a single Internet Explorer window.
    9. Follow the instructions here
