(Skip this Page If You're Upgrading Rather than Installing for the First Time)
Step 1 -- Download PopUpCop
This opens a box labeled File Download.
Step 2 -- Install PopUpCop
Click the Open button in the
File Download box. This causes the software to be delivered
to your computer.
Internet Explorer 5
Internet Explorer 6
Step 3 (Certain Browser Versions Only) -- Authorize the Download
Internet Explorer next makes certain that you wish to proceed.
Click Yes.
Step 4 -- Accept the License Agreement
In the License Agreement box that appears,
read the license, click I Accept,
then click Next.
Step 5 -- Decide Where to Put the Files
PopUpCop's installer needs to know into which folder
you want its files to be placed. The default folder is
fine for most users. If the folder doesn't already
exist, PopUpCop will create it automatically.
If instead you prefer some other
folder, click Browse and select it.
Click Next.
Step 6 -- Options
PopUpCop's most popular features are offered to you
during the installation procedure.
You can activate them now if you wish.
They are offered here for convenience;
your choices are not final.
You can change them later.
Select any that you like, then click Next.
Step 7 -- Copy the Files
Having completed your installation decisions, tell
PopUpCop's installer to proceed. In the Complete Installation
window, click Finish.
Now PopUpCop's installer copies the new files into their
destination folders on your computer.
Step 8 -- Restart Internet Explorer
PopUpCop does this for you automatically.
The Successful Installation page is displayed.
Step 9 -- Enable PopUpCop in the Toolbar (Not Usually Necessary)
In most installations, PopUpCop's buttons appear automatically
in Internet Explorer's toolbar, without any action required of you.
In some configurations, however, you may need to
manually make PopUpCop visible in Internet Explorer's toolbar.
Here's how.
Pull down the View menu and choose Toolbars
then PopUpCop.
Step 10 (Optional) -- Position PopUpCop in the Toolbar
Internet Explorer enables you to choose
the locations of the buttons in its toolbar.
When you install PopUpCop, PopUpCop's buttons
appear in the lower right-hand row of buttons.
You may prefer to see them elsewhere.
Each set of buttons in Internet Explorer's toolbar
has a "handle" -- a vertical bar to the left of each set
of buttons.
(On Windows XP, the handle appears as a vertical line of dots.)
To rearrange the layout of the buttons
in the toolbar, use your mouse to grab
a handle and drag it to any button row in the toolbar,
or drag it below or above the button rows to create a new row.
If you have Internet Explorer version 6,
you may need first to unlock the toolbar.
When the toolbar is locked, the handles are not visible.
To unlock the toolbar, pull down Internet Explorer's View
menu and choose Toolbars.
If the menu includes an item named Lock the Toolbars
and that menu item is checked, click on it.
This unlocks the toolbar; that is, it exposes the
handles and thus enables you
to drag the groups of buttons into new positions.
Once you've done this, it's a good idea to re-lock
the toolbar. The procedure to lock it is the same
as the procedure to unlock it:
pull down the View menu,
choose Toolbars, then choose Lock the Toolbars. This
locks them. Observe that the handles disappear.
Step 11 (Optional) -- Choose an Annoyance Level
The main feature of PopUpCop's toolbar is its three-position slider.
By default, it's set to the middle setting.
In this setting, PopUpCop suppresses popups and anything else
you selected in the Options step (Step 6, above).
Moving the slider to the left makes PopUpCop more restrictive.
In its leftmost setting, it is most restrictive;
most potentially annoying web site features are suppressed.
