PopUpCop's Animated images options page allow you to create lists of web sites for which animated images are selectively enabled or disabled (blocked). For example, you may generally block animated images except those at your favorite web sites, or block animated images only at selected sites.

Please note that you must enable animated image blocking to block any animated images.

PopUpCop Animated images Options

A single page or an entire web domain (source) can be blocked or allowed. For example, to allow Animated images at www.popupcop.com, enter this page name into the Allow List. To allow Animated images at all the web servers (e.g. www.popcop.com, secure.popupcop.com, etc.) in the popupcop.com web domain, enter *.popupcop.com into the Allow List.

The arrow-buttons, Left Button & Right Button, allow you to move one or more entries between the Allow list and the Block list. Select the item or items to be moved and then click the desired arrow.

The Blocking type radio buttons allow you to specify a general rule that PopUpCop will use to determine whether to block a particular Layer. You can always override this rule by adding sites to the block or allow lists.

  • If you choose the option Use old blocking method (delegate to Internet Explore), PopUpCop will tell Internet Explorer to block all image animation. The image will be downloaded and appear on the page, but only the first image in the set used for animation will display. With this option, the only way to view an animated image is to turn image animation blocking off and refresh the Web page, if necessary. If you choose this blocking rule, you cannot allow or block Animated images by site.

  • If you choose the option Block all, PopUpCop will block all animated images.

  • If you choose the option Block only animated images from third-party sites, PopUpCop will block an animated image only if the image originates from a different Internet domain from the main Web page. For example, if a page, say, http://www.ksndgdmdsd.com/ contains animated images both from ksndgdmdsd.com and from an ad bureau named obnoxiousads.com, PopUpCop will block the animated images from obnoxiousads.com, while not blocking the images from ksndgdmdsd.com.

  • If you choose the option Block animated images only at sites on the block list, PopUpCop will block all animated images only if the current Web page is found on the Animated image block list.

The Animated blocked color button allows you to specify the color of the colored rectangle that PopUpCop displays in front of blocked Animated images. When you click on this button, PopUpCop displays a standard Windows color chooser dialog.

The Unknown blocked color button allows you to specify the color of the colored rectangle that PopUpCop displays in front of blocked images whose animated status cannot be determined, either because the image does not exist, or because the image was not saved in Internet Explorer's disk cache. When you click on this button, PopUpCop displays a standard Windows color chooser dialog.

The Allow Animated images from all these sites check boxes allow you to specify a general rule that PopUpCop will use to determine whether to block a particular Flash movie. You can always override this rule by adding sites to the block or allow lists.

  • If you check the option Secure sites ("https://"), PopUpCop will allow Animated images at all secure sites.
  • If you check the option My computer, PopUpCop will allow Animated images from Web pages on your computer.
  • If you check the option Local Intranet zone, PopUpCop will allow Animated images from Web pages in this security zone. This zone generally includes sites in your home or company's intranet.
  • If you check the option Trusted sites zone, PopUpCop will allow Animated images from Web pages in this security zone.

PopUpCop helps you form the proper URL to enter in the Enter new page, server or domain dialog. When you click on New (or select an entry in either list and click Edit) then you see this dialog:

PopUpCop Enter new page,
server or domain Dialog

This allows you to type in the URL (web address) of sites that you want to add to either list. The two buttons on the right, Make server and Make domain are URL helper tools. They allow you to take a complicated URL and quickly turn it into either a server address or a domain address.

For example, if you copy a URL from your browser, such as, http://www.popupcop.com/test_ads/test_ad.gif and then you paste this into the type-in field, clicking the buttons will simplify the URL and make it into a server or domain. Clicking Make server gives www.popupcop.com and clicking Make domain gives *.popupcop.com. The asterisk (*) tells PopUpCop to match any characters in the name. Thus, you can filter on similar domain names, such as abcdserver.com and xyzserver.com, by entering *server.com.

The Delete button removes the selected items from the list. To remove more than one at a time Ctrl-left-click on the items and then click the Delete button. A confirmation dialog appears for you to accept or cancel the delete action.

PopUpCop's Animated image information dialog shows what animated (and unknown status) images PopUpCop found on the page that you are currently viewing. It also indicates whether the image is from a third-party site. From this dialog you can determine which what images PopUpCop has blocked. You can also use this dialog to create entries in the Images allow or block list.
