PopUpCop's Flash movies options page allows you to create lists of web sites for which Flash movies are selectively enabled or disabled (blocked). For example, you may generally block Flash movies except those at your favorite web sites, or block Flash movies only at selected sites.

Please note that you must enable Flash autoplay blocking to block any Flash movies.

PopUpCop Flash options

A single page or an entire web domain (source) can be blocked or allowed. For example, to allow Flash from www.popupcop.com, enter this page name into the Allow List. To allow Flash from all the web servers (e.g. www.popcop.com, secure.popupcop.com, etc.) in the popupcop.com web domain, enter *.popupcop.com into the Allow List.

The arrow-buttons, Left Button & Right Button, allow you to move one or more entries between the Allow list and the Block list. Select the item or items to be moved and then click the desired arrow.

The Blocking type radio buttons allow you to specify a general rule that PopUpCop will use to determine whether to block a particular Flash movie. You can always override this rule by adding sites to the block or allow lists.

  • If you choose the option Block all Flash movies, PopUpCop will block all Flash movies.
  • If you choose the option Block only third-party movies, PopUpCop will block a Flash movie only if the movie file comes from a different Internet domain from the main Web page. For example, if a page, say, http://msn.espn.go.com/ (ESPN's main page) contains Flash content from both go.com and starwave.com, PopUpCop will block the advertisement from starwave.com, while not blocking ESPN's Flash navigation bar.
  • If you choose the option Block Flash movies only at sites on the block list, PopUpCop will block a Flash movie only if either the movie file location or location or the page on which the movie is referenced is found on the Flash movie block list.

The Blocked color button allows you to specify the color of the colored rectangle that PopUpCop displays in front of blocked Flash movies. When you click on this button, PopUpCop displays a standard Windows color chooser dialog.

The Allow flash movies from all these sites check boxes allow you to specify a general rule that PopUpCop will use to determine whether to block a particular Flash movie. You can always override this rule by adding sites to the block or allow lists.

  • If you check the option Secure sites ("https://"), PopUpCop will allow Flash movies at all secure sites.
  • If you check the option My computer, PopUpCop will allow Flash movies from Web pages on your computer.
  • If you check the option Local Intranet zone, PopUpCop will allow Flash movies from Web pages in this security zone. This zone generally includes sites in your home or company's intranet.
  • If you check the option Trusted sites zone, PopUpCop will allow Flash movies from Web pages in this security zone.

PopUpCop helps you form the proper URL to enter in the Enter new page, server or domain dialog. When you click on New (or select an entry in either list and click Edit) then you see this dialog:

PopUpCop Enter new page,
server or domain Dialog

This dialog allows you to type in the URL (web address) of sites that you want to add to either list. The two buttons on the right, Make server and Make domain are URL helper tools. They allow you to take a complicated URL and quickly turn it into either a server address or a domain address.

For example, if you copy a URL from your browser, such as, http://www.popupcop.com/test_ads/test_ad.swf and then you paste this into the type-in field, clicking the buttons will simplify the URL and make it into a server or domain. Clicking Make server gives www.popupcop.com and clicking Make domain gives *.popupcop.com. The asterisk (*) tells PopUpCop to match any characters in the name. Thus, you can filter on similar domain names, such as abcdserver.com and xyzserver.com, by entering *server.com.

The Delete button removes the selected items from the list. To remove more than one at a time Ctrl-left-click on the items and then click the Delete button. A confirmation dialog appears for you to accept or cancel the delete action.

PopUpCop's Flash movie information dialog shows what Flash movies PopUpCop found on the page that you are currently viewing. It also indicates whether the movie originates from a third-party server. From this dialog you can determine which Flash movies you are blocking. You can also use this dialog to create entries in the Flash movie allow or block list.
