PopUpCop's Popup Options allow you to customize how PopUpCop handles popups. There are general web site characteristics that can be used to determine if a popup is desirable. These include secure sites (https://), local Intranets sites, files from your computer, and sites that are defined by the Windows Trusted Sites Zone. By default, PopUpCop allows popups from these types of sites. You can disallow popups from these types of sites by clearing the appropriate checkbox.

Script dialogs and pseudo-popups are blocks that are specific to certain types of annoyance tricks. Each can be independently controled. Here is a summary of each block and what it suppresses

Close GeoCities Ad Squares PopUpCop will close the GeoCities Ad Squares that appear in the upper right-hand corner of any GeoCities Web page.

Close unsolicited script alert dialogs PopUpCop will close unsolicited Script Alert messages.

Close unsolicited prompt dialogs PopUpCop will close unsolicited Script Prompt dialogs.

Close unsolicited Add Favorites dialogs PopUpCop will close unsolicited Add Favorite dialogs.

Close unsolicited HTML dialogs PopUpCop will close unsolicited HTML dialogs.

Close unsolicited HTML Help windows PopUpCop will close unsolicited HTML help windows invoked by the "showHelp" Javscript statement.

Close FastClick InVue ads PopUpCop will close the fastclick "InVue" ads that walk across the page and come to rest right in the center of the page.

Close unsolicited script query dialogs PopUpCop will close unsolicited Script Query dialogs.

Close unsolicited VBScript prompt dialogs PopUpCop will close unsolicited VBScript prompts.

Close unsolicited Set Home Page dialogs PopUpCop will close unsolicited prompts to change your home page.

Close Script Error dialogs PopUpCop will close script error messages.

Close unsolicited "createPopup" windows PopUpCop will close unsolicited windows invoked by the "createPopup" Javscript statement.

Close unsolicited "AddDesktop" windows PopUpCop will close unsolicited windows invoked by the "AddDesktopComponent" Javscript statement.

Close unsolicited Search Pane windows PopUpCop will close unsolicited windows that appear in Internet Explorer's Search Pane.

Ctrl key temporarily disables popup blocking: If you check this box, PopUpCop will not block popups if you hold down the control (Ctrl) key while a page is loading.
Shift key temporarily disables popup blocking -: If you check this box, PopUpCop will not block popups if you hold down the Shift key while a page is loading.

More popup settings

If you press the More popup settings... button, PopUpCop displays a dialog:

Do not let (invisible) popups navigate

If you choose this option (the default), PopUpCop will not allow hidden suppressed popups windows to navigate.

Let (invisible) popups navigate

If you choose this option, PopUpCop will allow hidden suppressed popups windows to navigate. Choosing this option will reduce your system's performance. Choosing this option might also reduce the number of script errors that you see.

Wait n milliseconds before closing hidden popups.

This option reduces script errors by allowing the hidden popup windows to navigate for a set period of time. Increasing this value can reduce errors on slow sites.

Check block list for suspect popups

If you check this setting, PopUpCop will check your Block popups from list for a popup that it would have otherwise allowed, because the popup appears to be the result of a click. Note that putting a site in your block list might cause PopUpCop to block popups that you wish to see. If this is the case, then you should hold down the control (Ctrl) key while clicking on the link which invokes the popup."

Allow popups after pseudo navigate

When you click on a link at some web sites, the site will "navigate" back to the same page, then launch a popup. If you check this box, PopUpCop will allow this type of popup. Unfortunately, checking this box will also cause PopUpCop to allow some popups that you might not want to see.

Close "suspect" popups if the origin window navigates to a new page within 1.5 seconds

When you click on a link at some web sites, the site will display a popup immediately, then navigate the main window to another Web page. Since most popup blockers, including older versions of PopUpCop, classify the first popup as valid since it results from a user clicking on a link, this popup is allowed. Web sites have noticed this behavior and begun to deploy this technology to work around the blockers.

If you check this box (and the box for "Check block list for suspect popups" above), PopUpCop will monitor the behavior of original web page. If the origin pages navigates to a new page within 1.5 seconds, PopUpCop will close the popup. Note that you do not have to add the origin site to the block list in order for PopUpCop to block the popup.

Older versions of PopUpCop could close this type of popup, but only if you added the origin site to your block list.

Close new windows created via DDE from self.

The Windows Media Player provides and ActiveX control for the use of Web site developers. Unfortunately, this ActiveX control allows the web sites to open popups via script. Under certain conditions, PopUpCop can recognize this type of popup and block the popup. When you check this box, this type of blocking is enabled.
